A market of 28 million wealthy consumers
The five Nordic countries had about 28 million inhabitants in 2025, with Sweden the largest at 10.6 million. What sets the region apart is spending power per person, not size.

GDP per capita vs EU average (EU = 100)
In purchasing-power terms, Norwegians are 60% richer than the average EU citizen, and Danes 27% richer. For a brand, that means fewer customers to win, each worth more.
Consumers who adopt new technology first
Nordic consumers are online almost without exception, and they move early on new technology.
Connectivity: Denmark is among the EU countries with the highest share of people online, and its rural internet connectivity exceeds 99% (Eurostat, 2025).
Early adoption: 56% of Norwegians used generative AI tools in 2025, ahead of every EU country. Denmark (48%) and Finland (46%) top the EU list (Eurostat, 2025).
Mobile-first payments: Vipps MobilePay had 12.4 million users at the end of 2025. In Sweden, more than 8.9 million people, over 80% of the population, actively use Swish.
High purchasing power, and a habit of spending it online
Nordic households have money to spend and are used to spending it on new products.
Online every month: 86% of Nordic consumers shopped online in the last 30 days, up from 83% in 2024 (PostNord, Spring 2026).
Open to foreign brands: 71% bought online from abroad in the past year. Consumers already know international brands; what most brands lack is local shelf presence.
Wallet-first checkout: Swish, Vipps and MobilePay overtook credit cards in 2026 as the most used and most preferred online payment method. Brands that don’t support them lose sales at the last step.
A concentrated retail landscape: few doors, big reach
Consumer electronics retail in the Nordics runs through a small number of large chains: Elkjøp/Elgiganten, Power and Komplett, alongside telecom operators such as Telenor and Telia and specialists like Clas Ohlson.
That concentration cuts both ways. One listing with the right chain can put a product in front of a whole country, often several. But each chain has its own buyers, category plans, margin expectations and marketing calendar, and they are hard to reach from abroad.
Four markets, not one
“The Nordics” is a useful label, but Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Finland are four separate markets, each with its own language, culture and buying habits.

What works in Stockholm does not automatically work in Oslo or Helsinki. Packaging, manuals, customer support and marketing need local language, and each country has its own mix of chains, price levels, campaign seasons and consumer expectations. Brands that treat the region as one market often end up with a weak position in all four. Brands that plan country by country, while using the region’s shared chains and logistics, get the scale without losing local relevance.
How Northbound Partners helps you get in
Northbound Partners works on the brand side, not as a distributor. We help consumer-tech brands enter Nordic retail and run it from day one:
Market fit and plan: which products, which channels, what price position and when to launch, country by country.
Retail access: introductions and sell-in with Elkjøp/Elgiganten, Power, Komplett, the telecom operators and specialist chains.
Commercial execution: listings, campaign plans and follow-up with buyers, so your products keep their shelf space.
Our team has built Nordic businesses from the ground up, including growing Telenordic from zero to more than NOK 2 billion in revenue.
